We’ve reached another milestone, ladies and gents! My little boy rolled over!
He did it a couple times before, but I quickly got it on video this afternoon. He’s such a cute little kid!

This post is about 10 days late, but if you read my last post, you’ll understand why. Honestly, one other reason I haven’t written this post is because there’s simply not too much to write about! In the past month, Jake hasn’t really done anything that different, but he is a completely different baby. Does that make sense?
I think about it as him being more refined I guess. He’s not doing anything really that different, but he has gotten better at doing what he does. For example, he was able to sit in his jumper last month, but got tired of it quickly and had to be picked up again soon after being placed in it. Now, we can put him in the jumper and he will play by himself for several minutes before letting us know he’s ready to move on to the next game. He seems generally more content than before as well. He loves watching us and standing on our legs. When we get him up in the morning, he is usually all smiles, which I LOVE. He *knock on wood* is a great, happy baby. We are so blessed!
That being said, in his Three Month Recap, I talked about all the new experiences Jake had and all the milestones he’d achieved like being able to hold his own head up, thus able to sit by himself in the bumbo. Maybe it’s me being an unobservant mama, but he doesn’t seem to have done as much new stuff this past month.
I feel like I work a lot and miss out on a lot of time with Jake. It’s hard to find a balance between work and family time when you have a retail job and work odd hours including many nights and weekends. I try to remember that is the quality of time I spend with Jake and not the quantity of time, but sometimes that’s hard to remember.
Here are a few things that I know the little guy did last month:
March 9: Went “flying” with Daddy

March 9: Made a new friend
March 10-11: Took my first road trip to Cleveland for Grandma N’s birthday

March 11: Laughed for the first (and only) time
March 18: Celebrated Cousin K’s birthday at the bowling alley

March 23: Visited Mom’s work and then participated in our second ever MeetUp event. Then Daddy and I learned a new game! (No babies were harmed in the playing of this game…)

March 25: Nearly outgrown my 3 month clothes. Had to stock up on some 6 month clothes.

March 30: Mom can’t quit taking pictures of my feet…

April 1: Got my first bout of a stomach bug (we think) and took a (short and constantly monitored) nap in Mommy & Daddy’s bed

April 2: Got my four month shots (and handled them like a champ again!) Daddy took me this time.
April 3: Started growing more hair!

April 7: Getting better at grabbing toys!

I’m trying to keep up on these monthly posts because I know how important they will be to me once he gets older. I’m hoping, if I don’t post any other blog posts, that these monthly recaps will still be consistent. I have started a calendar on Google Calendars to help me keep track of all the new things Jake does.
I’m starting to feel more like myself and hopefully with that I will begin to blog more often. It’s all about balance.
Hello, lovely readers. You may have noticed I’ve been absent for the past few weeks. I could say I’ve been out galavanting, on a whirlwind trip across the world, or spending time cuddling my little bundle of goodness.
That’s partly true but the real truth is that…gasp…I’m having a hard time juggling everything. Between work, Jake, Jeff, and all the chores that need to be done, blogging has fallen by the wayside. Even cooking has taken a major hit lately, which you all know I love to do.
I find my eyelids drooping around 7:30p, right after Jake is tucked away in bed. Of course, I then have to clean bottles, prepare bottles, clean the kitchen, do laundry, oh and find some time to relax!
So basically I’m taking a step back. I pretty much already have as I haven’t posted a new blog post in weeks. I just wanted to let you guys know I’m ok, but I’m exhausted. I hope to pop up sporadically once in a while with a neat tip, a baby Jake update, or a yummy recipe, but by no means will it be every day or even every week. Think of my posts as RAEs: random acts of entertainment.
I’m hoping my break is short and sweet, but I’m not going to rush things either. I’m going to spend time focusing on my men. I’m stopping to smell the roses. And they are starting to smell very sweet.

Back in 2009 when I decided I had had enough of my weight and it was time to do something about it, I knew I had to change two things: my eating and my exercising. This is a no brainer for getting fit. Here are some of the things I incorporated into my diet:
Oatmeal: I would typically have this for breakfast every day. I liked adding a scoop of peanut butter to it as well as a banana or some dried cherries. Slivered almonds were great if I wanted a little extra crunch too.
String Cheese and Roasted Almonds: This was one of my go to snacks. Lots of protein and just enough fat to get me to the next meal a few hours away.
Carrots and Cream Cheese: I know, it sounds kind of odd, but the Philadelphia Low Fat Garden Veggie cream cheese is similar to really thick ranch dressing. Try it. I promise you’ll like it.
Chobani yogurt: I have always loved yogurt, but I love Chobani even more because of the added protein. Protein=sustained energy and who doesn’t want that??
Apples with Low Fat Caramel Dip: I have a MAJOR sweet tooth and almost always have to end my lunches and dinners with a little treat. I started eating apples with caramel dip as a way to get in a healthy treat without blowing my diet.
Hard boiled eggs: Again, this is a great source of protein. I actually don’t like the yolk, so I would bring a couple eggs and just eat the whites with a pinch of salt. It makes for a yummy, quick breakfast if you are able to toast a couple sliced of bread and add a slice of cheese to the mix. Yummy egg sammy!
Canned vegetable based soups: I ate a bunch of Progresso soup. At first I would eat all the varieties including the ones made with meat. Then I saw a special with Jamie Oliver that talked about the pink slime. Apparently this is what they use in canned soups. So long, meaty soups! It’s all veggies all the time for this girl.
Ham sandwiches: This was pretty much my staple for lunch. I almost always had a ham sandwich, light chips, and a yogurt. It was filling and tasty. I more often that not end up bringing this to work still to this day!
Frozen Meals: OK, so Lean Cuisines are probably not the best thing you can have (TONS OF SODIUM), but when I am in a hurry to get to work, I don’t always have time to make a sandwich or put a salad together. This is when I grab a frozen meal. I mean, hey, it’s either this or hitting the drive thru. You tell me which is better…
Weight Watchers Frozen Candy Bars: This is Weight Watchers’ version of a frozen Snickers ice cream bar. Oh so tasty and extremely satisfying. I loved when I had enough calories at the end of the day to enjoy on of these babies!
These were my go to foods when I was getting my eating back under control. Now that I’m having to do it again, however, I find myself still burnt out on many of these items.
So, dear friends, I need some help. What healthy foods or snacks do you keep on hand to maintain your healthy eating? I’m hoping to get some new ideas so I can keep the momentum of healthy eating going!

I’ve done it.
I’ve taken the plunge.
I no longer have “wordpress” in my URL address.
You may notice some changes coming in the future as I begin to play around and take more liberties with my blog now that I have the freedom.
For now…stay tuned!
Since the last time I posted a Pinterest Recipe Challenge was so successful (with myself at least) I thought I would do another challenge. Honestly, this is more to remind me which recipes I chose to make when I get to the grocery store! Ha! More often than not, I’ll pick a few recipes to make, shop for the ingredients, and by the time I go to make the recipe I forgot which one I picked out!
Here’s the next batch of recipes on deck:
For those of you wondering how my last batch of recipes turned out, please see below!
Chicken Adobo: This was really good! I added a little extra brown sugar in at the end because I thought it needed to be a tad sweeter.
Parmesan Chicken Bake: I wanted this to be really good, but it was just OK. The croutons on top worked to make the crust somewhat crispy, but if I had to choose, I would make the real dish instead of this one.
Frito Pie: This was really good too! My only problem? I made it waaaayyyy to spicy because I added canned chipotles in adobo and added too many. Oops!
Balsamic Parmesan Roasted Green Beans with Mushrooms: Confession…I haven’t quite made this yet. I do have green beans in my fridge so that I can hopefully make them in the next couple days.
Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings: OK, so here’s the deal. I made this dish…and then got the stomach flu. The thought of this dish kinda makes me queasy… It’s too bad too because from what I remember it was pretty tasty!
Nutter Butter Bars: I haven’t made this one either because I keep forgetting to pick up Nutter Butters! I may have to get some of those from work tomorrow…
Have you made anything recently (from pinterest or not) that you have loved?
When you have a baby, your life is all about milestones. You think ahead to when your baby will smile at you for the first time, when he’ll say his first word, and when he will start to crawl, walk, and (horror) run!
This weekend, we reached one of my favorite milestones thus far.
My little guy giggled. It is one of the most beautiful noises I have ever heard.
Enjoy. :)
I was going through my drafted posts and I came across this one I had already typed up! Talk about forgetfulness! I don’t know if anyone is even interested in Volumes 2 & 3 of these nursing posts, but here you go anyhow.
Disclaimer: If you’re not into knowing all about nursing, you may want to sit this one out!
Welcome to the second installment of Bethany’s Nursing Class. Missed Volume 1? You can catch it here.
OK, so we covered what to do when you experience dry, cracked, sore nipples and how to prevent them. Let’s move on to tips during nursing.
The first thing you want to figure out is the ideal position for you and baby. For Jacob and I, there are two favorites: cradle/cross cradle and side lying. The cradle and cross cradle holds are actually two different holds, but since I use props, it doesn’t really matter what you call it. Basically, I sit in a recliner, on the couch, or on the bed, put a nursing pillow in my lap, and lay Jacob on the pillow.
Cross Cradle Using Boppy

I received two different nursing pillows at my baby shower: the Brest Friend and the Boppy. There are pros and cons to both. The Brest Friend is a little firmer and sturdier than the Boppy. It straps around you and feels a little more secure than the Boppy and allows you to get up and walk around with it on. When Jake was just a little guy, I could walk around with him on it, but as he’s gotten heavier, it’s more of a challenge. I was never really able to breast feed while walking around though because he would lose his grip and his mouth would come off the breast. The bad thing about the Brest Friend is since it is firmer, the baby can’t relax and really enjoy the feeding. At least that’s how it seems to me. When baby is younger, this is a good thing since they have so much trouble staying awake, but now that he’s older, I like for him to enjoy the feeding. I briefly talked about these in My 11 Favorite Infant Items post.
The Boppy is like a small pillow that wraps around your waist. It’s a lot softer than the Brest Friend and I feel Jake can really cuddle into it. I honestly don’t use the Brest Friend much anymore, but when I was using both I would ask myself if I wanted Jake to be extra sleepy after his feedings or not. If it was late at night or if he’d had trouble falling asleep during the day, I would use the Boppy so he could cuddle up on it. If it was a typical feeding, I would gravitate towards the Brest Friend.
Side Lying
The other position we like, the side lying position, is phenomenal when you are exhausted and you just want to rest for a bit. What you do is lay on your side in bed or on the couch (I prefer in bed), pull baby up close to you so he’s laying on his side facing you, and offer the breast. It’s a very relaxed, calming position and Jacob always fell asleep when we did this position. It was a nice break from all the activity going on in the house and a way for us to just escape to the comforts of my bedroom for a half hour. I would typically turn on a TV show (Big Bang Theory was my show of choice) and just let Jacob take his time. No hurries, no rushing him so I could go back to sleep, just calm, easy nursing.
The next thing you want to do is get all your “props” together. This includes anything you will need in the next 20-45 minutes, because you won’t be able to move much once you start nursing. My list of props included a nursing pillow of some sort, a huge glass of water (you get so thirsty when you are nursing!), a blanket to cover myself and Jake, and my phone.
In the beginning when we were keeping track of things, I used my iPhone as a way to remember times, duration, and which side I last nursed on. My favorite app was the What to Expect: Baby Tracker app. It has options to remember feeding, sleeping, diapers, and vaccinations. When you get your little bundle home, you keep track of how often he goes to the bathroom, what kind of diaper he has (wet, poopy, combination, or dry), when you fed last, and which side you last nursed on. I didn’t really keep track of his sleeping or vaccinations, but they would be useful for some people I’m sure.
The other reason I always had to have my iPhone near me is, let’s be honest, because nursing can be a bit boring. Some people like to talk to their babies while they’re eating, some people don’t. I fall into the second category. It’s not that I don’t want to talk to Jake while he’s eating, I just don’t always have that much to say. Or sometimes I just don’t feel like talking. I am a relatively talkative person most of the time, but at 3a that’s the last thing I want to do. Instead, while my little man is chowing down, I amuse myself by reading blogs, drafting blog posts, or playing games like Solitaire. I also did some of my Christmas shopping via the Amazon app. Having my phone nearby was handy as well when I needed to communicate with Jeff, who was at the other end of the house, without having to yell and disturb Jacob’s eating.
Note: since drafting this post, I have (oddly enough) stopped using my phone during nursing sessions. Instead I typically just watch my little boy, think of the future, and just enjoy my time with him. :)
OK, so you found your position and you have all your props handy. Now, you feed…or attempt to. One thing you want to note is that your breast is a big, round circle and the baby’s mouth is too small to really receive in without a little help from you. My lactation consultant told me to think of my breast as a big cheeseburger. When you have a cheeseburger that is super huge, you typically grasp the burger in both hands and squeeze down to get it a little thinner, thus more manageable. That’s what you want to do with your breast as well. I flattened out my breast a little bit, angled the nipple towards the roof of baby’s mouth, and sort of pushed Jake’s head towards my breast. It is definitely easier to show than explain, so for tons of tips and tricks, ask your LC. The hospital should provide them, but if not find your local Le Leche League.
Something everyone has an opinion on is how exactly to feed. I had several people tell me several different things when it came to how long to nurse, which breast to nurse out of, when to switch sides, etc. This is my opinion on what worked best for me. I think every woman has to decide what is best for her as well.
When I first started nursing, I was nursing for 5-10 minutes on each side. I started with the opposite breast I used at the beginning of the last feeding. For example, if I started using my left breast at 6a and then switched to my right, I would use my right breast at 8a even though it was the breast I finished the 6a feeding out of.
After reading lots of opinions about using both breasts at each feeding, I switched up my technique. I started using one breast at each feeding and then alternating at the next feeding. For example, I would feed exclusively out of the left breast at 6a and then exclusively out of the right breast at 8a. Again, I read lots of opinions about this way of nursing.
Ultimately, I consulted Manika, my neonatologist friend. I felt like I was having production problems and wanted a little consulting. Basically when Jake would nurse, he would be latched on for a good long while, then pull off like he was done. Then, not 30 minutes later, he would be bawling and gnawing on his hands signalling he was hungry. I would nurse him again and the cycle would repeat. Finally, I would give him a bottle and he would be fine. I think I wasn’t producing enough for him.
Anyhow, Manika suggested I nurse for 15 minutes on one side, burp him, and then switch to the second side for 15 minutes. You want to give your little one enough time on each breast to reach the rich hindmilk (the milk that keeps their little bellies full and have all the yummy nutrients they need to grow) while still stimulating each breast. To increase my milk supply, she also suggested pumping for 15 minutes after Jake was done eating to tell my body I needed more milk for my growing boy. (BTW, this method really worked for me! If you need to increase your milk supply, I suggest you follow this plan too.)
The moral of the story for me was to nurse with both breast at each feeding even if the baby only eats on one side for a few minutes. In the first 3-4 weeks, you are building your milk supply and you want to make sure your body realizes the baby’s needs. Also, feed as often as your baby wants to eat. This also stimulates milk production and helps your body understand how much your little one needs.
A big struggle you will most likely find yourself faced with is keeping baby awake during feedings. If your little one is anything like mine, he will nurse for maybe 5-10 minutes and then fall asleep. Most likely, he isn’t getting the hindmilk he needs and he probably can’t stay awake long enough to nurse on each breast. There are several things you can do to keep him awake, even though I hate waking a sleeping baby! Little babies want nothing more than to sleep. They get a teeny amount of food in their bellies (just enough to be satisfied for 30 minutes or so) and want to go back to sleep. This means they aren’t getting the hindmilk and you will probably be awake again in a few minutes to nurse again.
First, strip the little one down to just his diaper. Yes, he will be cold. Yes, you will have to fight your urge to keep him covered. You are trying to make him slightly uncomfortable so he wakes up. I hated doing this because after he was done nursing I had to dress him again. His clothes would be cold from not being next to his body, therefore waking him up after he was done with his nighttime feeding. I eventually resorted to putting his clothes under the blanket we were using to try to hold in some of the warmth.
The second thing you can try is having Dad get his hands wet with cold water and touching the baby’s back, legs, face, etc. Again, the cold should wake him up and jar him enough to want to continue feeding. Again, you will hate making your little one cold, but just keep telling yourself it is for the best.
Third, try bugging your little guy. Play with his feet, tap under his chin, tickle him, etc. Do anything you can think of to startle him awake so he remembers what he is there to do.
Finally, change a diaper. The movement and having their privates exposed to cold air usually wakes them up at least a little bit. I found myself feeding from one breast until Jake fell asleep, then changing his diaper midway through the feeding. After the diaper change, I would switch breasts and hope he stayed awake long enough to reach the hindmilk on breast #2. You can also try burping in between breasts, though burping sometimes has the effect of inducing sleep instead of waking.
Side note on burping: as I stated in the previous post, most people say you don’t have to burp breastfed babies since they don’t take in much air at all, but Jake struggled with “gassies” when he was little. After we started burping him, he got better. I typically burp him any time he pulls off the breast. Sometimes I burp him for a few seconds, other times I go longer. It depends on how fussy he seems and how long it has been since I burped him the last time.
You may be wondering how often you need to feed your baby. Your pediatrician should go over this with you and they may tell you something different than I’m going to tell you. This is what I was told and what I ultimately ended up doing. Every baby is different and you have to find what works best for you. For us, we fed Jake every 2-3 hours during the day without much exception. Before you ask, yes, that’s every two hours from the start of one feeding to the start of the next. Yep, you will feel like all you’re doing is feeding the baby and changing his diaper. You won’t have much time for anything else. Make your casseroles up before you go into labor, invite people over to do your laundry and clean your house, prepare yourself for sleep deprivation. It sucks. But you know what? It’s temporary. It doesn’t last that long (though it seems like forever when you’re living it).
We fed Jake every 2-3 hours during the day and every 3-4 hours at night unless he told us otherwise. We had to wake him up during the day because he just wanted to sleep, but at night he definitely didn’t skip any meals. I would always set my alarm clock for the 4 hour mark, but he would wake us up by 3 hours at the latest. You have to wake the baby up to feed until he’s back up to his birth weight. When we went to the pediatrician for Jacob’s two week check up and they told us we no longer had to wake him up to feed him, I did a little happy dance! Yay! We can let him sleep if he wants! Jake has settled in to a pretty predictable 3 hour feeding schedule, but sometimes in the evening he goes 4-5 hours. It’s not too bad!
Speaking of scheduling, I tried getting Jacob on a schedule in the first few weeks. I had read lots of books that said it was never too early to try. My opinion? Two weeks old is too early. Four weeks old is too early. Six weeks old is pushing it, but it’s not unheard of. Your baby will probably decide his own schedule. You just have to watch him so he can tell you what that schedule is. As I said, Jake is on a relatively predictable 3 hour feeding schedule. He determined that himself…he just had to let me know it!
I think this post is long enough for now. In the next post, we will discuss pumping at length. You are on the edge of your seat. I just know it!
Please keep in mind that everything I discussed today is based on what works best for me and Jacob. Hopefully you’ll get some tips that you can use with your little one, but chances are your experiences will vary some. Regardless, please contact me if you have any questions!
Jake is three months old today! I just can’t believe it! He’s getting so big and showing so many signs of growing up I just can’t stand it. Here’s a look back at the last month:
2/1: We took our first walk around the block. It was unseasonably warm and I just couldn’t resist breaking out the stroller. I look forward to taking him on many more walks in the coming months. *So this was technically during his second month, but he’s just so darn cute I couldn’t resist including it!

2/8: Jacob had his two month checkup and he did fabulously! He was 23 inches long, 12.1 pounds, and in the 50th percentile in both height and weight. He cried a little when he got his shots, but as soon as mama picked him up, he stopped and snuggled in for some love. I hate seeing my baby in pain but I love that I can make him feel better!
2/10: A few days later, he got to meet Jeff’s dad and his dad’s girlfriend. They live in Connecticut and came down to meet Jake and his cousins. He also started smiling a lot more this weekend.

2/14: We celebrated Valentine’s day today as well as Grandma P’s birthday! Jake gave us a little photo of himself he made with the ladies at day care.

2/16: Jake’s whole class at daycare got a cold. Most of the babies actually developed RSV, but luckily Jake didn’t. He did develop a cough, which resulted in him having some congestion in his chest. One day, he started gagging on it and we picked him up from day care and took him to Urgent Care. The doctor said one of the reasons Jake didn’t get RSV may have been due to being breastfed. Yay for mama’s milk!
2/18: I was working on tummy time with Jake one morning. I decided to put him on the boppy to see if he liked using it any better than being flat on the floor. This is what happened:
2/20: We talk to Jake all the time, like most parents. Jeff was talking to him one day and caught this on video!
2/25: Because he is able to hold his head up, we are able to use the bumbo

and his bouncer! Technically he’s not supposed to use his bouncer for another month, but we never leave him unattended. I think he’ll be OK. :)
2/29: Jake loves bath time and before every bath, I lay him on his tummy facing the mirror while I get the bathroom ready for him. He was being so incredibly cute one day, I snapped a few pictures. What a sweetie! He loves to face the mirror and “talk” with his friend who looks just like him!

3/1: On this day, Jake convinced me we needed to make some new mom and baby friends. I ended up attending a Meetup event where I met a blog reader and several other moms! We look forward to attending more meetups in the future.

3/3: This past weekend, both Jeff and I got sick with the stomach flu. We wore masks around the house and washed our hands incessantly so hopefully Jake didn’t get it. I think we succeeded in preventing the spreading of the illness but it was touch and go there for a while!
3/3: One good thing that came out of spending so much time with Jake this weekend was holding “conversations” with him. I mustered all my energy into keeping Jake entertained. I would play with him for a little bit, then collapse for a while to try to recharge my batteries. He was such a good baby, playing by himself for some of the time to let Mommy and Daddy rest!
I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing our walk down memory lane this month. This is something I’m hoping to keep up with in the future!
As always, please subscribe to my YouTube channel to keep up with all Jake’s videos, as well as my Facebook page. Hope you have a fabulous day!
Question: What did your little one do in the fourth month of his or her life that I should look forward to?
If you talk to most people who know me, they will say I tend to have expensive tastes. I can walk into a store and, without looking at price tags, pick out the most expensive item in the room. I inevitably fall in love with said item and find it hard to convince myself to purchase something less expensive. I often times opt to not purchase anything at all if I can’t have exactly the item I want.
Not only do I usually pick out the most expensive items, I almost always get things brand new. Not because I’m opposed to hand me downs (in fact, I had a lot of those growing up), but because more often than not I want specific items that no one else has. That or I’m too shy to ask for hand outs.
I realize this does not put me in a good light. I accept that about myself and move on. Sometimes you can’t change…
Anyhow, one day, when my mom was visiting, we passed a consignment store on the way to Bath and Body Works. She asked me if I’d ever been in there and I looked at her in disgust. Jake wear anything that wasn’t brand new? Well, that was just unheard of! She rolled her eyes and led me into the store.
I apprehensively started poking my head around the store. I started off by looking at the books. Pretty decent selection for relatively cheap. Not bad, not bad. Let’s keep going.
I passed rows and rows of toys and board games. Interesting…both those things can be expensive especially when kids play with them a handful of times and then they get discarded like yesterday’s new.
Then we got to the clothes. It was like a shroud lifted from around my head. I finally saw the light! Why pay $10 for a new sleeper when you could get the same thing (albeit lightly worn) for $2.50? $20 for an outfit for my little man? Please…try $5 bucks! What about short sleeved onesies for him to roam around the house in during the warmer months? $5-7 each? Nope…ONE DOLLAR. ONE!
I was sold. That day I picked a few items up and took them home to Jeff. I figured he would say he didn’t want his little boy to wear clothes other kids had worn, but he said, “That’s great! Just wash them first.” (He’s so funny.)
Since that day, I have visited the same store a few times. Each time they have new stuff, so I try to go every few weeks just to look. I have found some pretty cute things I must say!
Then, Abby posted a blog about a huge sale she volunteered at where she lives. She talked about all the great purchases she and her husband made at the sale. She also talked about how being a volunteer not only let her see all the items that were up for grabs, but let her in early to shop before all the other people. What a great idea! I asked her how she found these sales and she gave me some tips. I googled consignment sales in my area and found a Facebook page about it. Low and behold, they were looking for volunteers to work the sale! Bada bing, bada boom! I currently have an email out to the group asking for more information.
I’ll keep you posted…
I’m so excited. That is all.
