Grocery iQ App

Planning and organization is crucial when it comes to most aspects of my life;  the most important being grocery shopping.  In the past I have made lists on pieces of paper at work, napkins while at lunch, a scrap of paper next to my bed, etc.  The problem with this, however, is typically I don’t have all the pieces of paper with me when I find myself at the store or I don’t have anything to write with or on when I realize I’m out of something.

Technology, in all it’s wonderful glory, has helped me.  I’m a list maker, as you can tell from the paragraph above.  When I got my iPhone last year, one of the first apps I searched for was a list app.  Once in the App Store, I realized they have list apps specialized for specific things!  There’s a reminder app, that helps you remember deadlines (my favorite is Due), they have running apps that help you keep track of past runs instead of listing them on a calendar (Nike+ is great and is now installed automatically in the iPhone I believe), and they have my most favorite app of all:  Grocery iQ.

When I first downloaded this app, I played with it a little, but only recently did I realize the full potential of this great product!  OK…the basics:

1.  Adding Items to Your Grocery List
When you first bring up the program, it takes you to “List”.  This is where you can add items to your list.  You can be as vague or specific as you want.  Let’s walk through an example:  to add something you hit the “+” button in the top right corner.  Then you start typing in the product you’d like to add to the list.  I typed in “creamer”.

It brings up generic products at first and then as you scroll down it gets more specific, adding brand names and other qualifiers.  If you want to add the generic creamer word to your list (since you are most likely to know the kind of creamer you want to pick up), you tap on the item and it adds it to your list.

If you wanted to be specific you could type in “International Delight”, which I did next.

It brings up a bunch of different varieties of International Delight creamer.  I can either pick one at random if I’m not sure which flavor I’d like to try, or I can look for one in particular like “French Vanilla”, which is one I like a lot.  Then, as above, you touch on the product and it goes onto your list.

Another way to add products to your list is to use the bar code scanner.  I rarely if ever use this feature as many of the products I buy are Kroger brand.  If you do want to use this feature, you click on the bar code in the top left corner, align the bars around the bar code you want to scan, and it snaps a photo.

Then it searches for the product in it’s database.  I had a pack of Gobstoppers sitting next to me, so I scanned that.  It didn’t find it, so I would have to enter this product in manually.

This brings me to my final way to add a product to your list.  Say you want to enter something incredibly specific like “skim smoked mozzarella cheese” or something like that.  I don’t even know if that product exists, but say you are searching for it.  If you start typing in what you want and, if the product is not found in the database, you’ll get this message:

To add this item even if it’s not found in the database, you just click “Done”.  It will put the item into the category “Other”, which you can then click on and change to “Dairy” or whichever category you deem most fitting.

2.  Managing Your Grocery List
Deleting An Item
If you add something to your list that you didn’t mean to, or you realized later you already had on hand and didn’t need to pick up again, you can click on the blue arrow next to the item while in your grocery list, scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit “delete item”.  This will remove the item from your list.

Adding an Item to Your Favorites
Just as above where you clicked on the blue button and scrolled to the bottom of the page to delete an item, you can make an item a “favorite”.  This is not a feature I use very often, but I’m sure it would be very helpful to some who tend to buy the same things over and over again.  I end up just researching for products every time I make my list.

Changing the Item’s Description

If you need to change the items description, click on the blue button once again and go into the item’s information page.  I need butter, so I added it to my list.  Each item will have different descriptors associated to it.  If you type in peppers for example, there will be a drop down menu labeled “Type”.  You can then go in and change the item to say “Red Bell Peppers” instead of just “Peppers”.

For butter, the first descriptor it gave me was “Salt”.  I always buy Unsalted butter, so I changed the “-” to “Unsalted”.  Next was form, to which I picked “Stick”.  I left the store descriptor the same, but if you have several types of stores in your program (more on that later), you could choose “grocery store” or “Kroger” or whichever store you’d like.

If you want to change which aisle the product is found, you can do that, but a lot of the time the aisle is pretty accurate.  I needed two pounds of butter (I like to keep some on hand at all times), so I upped the quantity to 2.  It give the option to use weight, which comes in handy when you are adding meats, but most of the time I don’t bother updating that category.  I could also choose a package size which, for butter, is broken down into 8 or 16 ounces.  The butter I buy comes in pounds, so I chose 16 oz.  There is also a place to put in unit price and total, which is great when you are planning your list with the store flyer right next to you, but I don’t usually write the prices down.

Finally, they have description and note categories.  If you add anything to the description category, it will show up under the product on the main screen.  This is useful if you need a certain size that is not listed in the Item Information screen.

If you add a note, it will only show up as a small triangle next to the arrow for the product.  This alerts you that you made a note and you will need to go back into the item to see what you wrote.  This is helpful if you want to remember which recipes you need the item for.

3.  Using the List While Shopping
OK, so you have your list and are ready to go shopping.  All you have to do is scroll to the aisle you are in and start shopping for the items on your list.  Once you find the items you are looking for, you click on the empty box next to the item.  This puts a green √ in the box and moves it to the bottom of the list below the “Checkout” line.  I like this feature a lot because it clears out all the clutter of already purchased items and just lets you focus on the items you still have left to pick up.  Once you’re finished shopping and want to clear out the list, you just hit “Checkout” and it wipes the purchased items out of your list.  Then you can begin creating a new list!

4.  Changing/Adding Stores
Along the bottom of the program, you’ll notice an option labeled “Stores”.  This is where you can add, delete, or change the stores listed in your program.  Right now, I just have two stores listed:  Dorothy Lane & Kroger.  I typically buy my meats and produce at Dorothy Lane as the quality is better and the rest I buy at Kroger because Dorothy Lane is just too expensive for prepackaged items.

If I wanted to add another store, for example “Target”, to my list I would click on the “+” button, type in Target, and press done.   It gives you some options you can change and then finish.  This will put the new store in your store list.  You can add as many stores as you want.  The options are endless.  If you want to remember to pick up a few perfect Ts from Old Navy the next time you’re there, you can add Old Navy to your store list and then add perfect Ts to the list.

Another cool feature found under “Stores” is changing and adding aisles.  At Kroger, our canned vegetables, canned beans, herbs, and packaged sides are all in the same aisle.  Instead of having four separate aisles listed in my app, I could add a new aisle labeled “Canned Veg, Beans, Herbs, Pkg Sides”.  This would combine all the items found in the four categories into one aisle, which makes it convenient when trying to complete your shopping trip quickly and easily.  I can’t tell you how many times I get to one end of the store only to have to go back to the other end.  This is so frustrating!  Having my own aisles listed helps decrease that frustration.

5.  My Newest Discovery-List Sharing
There are so many other features of this app that I could probably go on and on and on about it, but that would result in an extremely long blog post that would get pretty boring.  I do want to mention list sharing though.  I found this feature about a week ago and since then I have been having all kinds of fun with it!

I have wanted to be able to make my grocery list on the computer for a while now and have it sent directly to my phone so I’d have it when I went shopping.  I usually find the recipes I make online, so it just makes sense to be able to open two windows side by side on my laptop and make the list while looking at the recipe.  I don’t know how long Grocery iQ has been available to update online, but for some reason I never thought to check it out.  Last week, I had the idea to search for the website and, low and behold, they had the whole database available to me online!  Yay!

Then I googled linking the online database I saw on my laptop with the phone app.  Turns out, they can be linked!  In the app on the iPhone, you click on the three circles at the bottom righthand corner, then click on “Account”.  When you log in (or create an account), it sends your information to the online database.  Then, when you log in online, it brings up the information you have on your phone.  This also works with an iPad if you have one available to you.  From then on, all your devices are linked.  This means if you update one list, all  your lists get updated at the same time!  This is a big time saver for me, as I don’t always have my phone next to me to update with recipe ingredients I need.  It’s the small things in life that make me happy.  :)

OK, so I now I’ve written an entire blog post on one app, but it saves me a lot of time and aggravation when it comes to the grocery store.  A small bonus:  your significant other can update your lists too so, instead of Jeff saying “Honey, we need milk!”, he can just add it to my list.

He normally doesn’t, but the option is still there!

Week 21: An Extra Special Post

I was going to put “This week on a very special Blossom” as the title, but unless you are Carolyn (or a huge Friends fan) you wouldn’t have gotten it!  Today I will reveal the sex of the baby as it was revealed to me earlier today!  But we’ll get there…

How Far Along:  We are officially over the hump and on the downhill coast.  Today marks 21 weeks of being with child!  I still, even after seeing pictures and hearing heartbeats, cannot believe I’m pregnant.  I am thankful every single time I walk out of the doctor’s office getting a “good report”.  Keep on getting those good marks, Peanut!  :)

Size of Baby:  Babycenter.com says Peanut is 10.5 inches long and about 10-14 ounces.  I know, because of the ultrasound earlier today, that my little Peanut is 13 ounces!  Right on track!

(This is a picture of the actual size our baby is supposed to be according the the Pampers Hello, Baby app.  This is how Peanut was positioned, except flipped vertically.)

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  I am right at 11 pounds gained.  This is one pound heavier than last week.  I was having a little weakness for McDonald’s breakfasts earlier in the pregnancy, but I knew that wasn’t healthy for me or baby, so I have decided to cut them out and eat whole grain cereals and oatmeal for breakfast.  I want to put on enough weight for baby, but not too much weight for mama!

Maternity Clothes:  Since I was off Tuesday and Wednesday this week, I went on a massive maternity pant/short shopping spree.  I went to so many stores looking for bottoms (and some tops) that didn’t make me look bigger than I was and were still comfortable.  I have decided maternity clothes, even though they are apparently better now than they used to be, are still ugly for the most part.  I have found if you pick the right types of clothes (empire waists mainly), you can totally get away with wearing regular clothes.  So much more variety and cheaper too!  Now, this being said, you may have to go get a few pairs of pants and shorts, as I did.  BUT, my friends, you can also pick up a Be Band (or belly band) and extend the lives of your pre-pregnancy pants!  They are pretty fantastic!

Gender:  In case you haven’t deduced from the sash I’m wearing in the pictures above, we are having….a little boy!!!

(That arrow would be pointing to his little penis!)

Jeff and I are so freaking excited we can’t stand it!  We would have totally been excited either way, but I just had a feeling I was having a boy for most of the pregnancy and I was right!  I posted something about finding out the gender on Facebook this morning and my friend Lauren told me to live on the edge and not find out, to which my mom agreed.  When I called my mom earlier today, she asked if “Peanut has nuts or not”.  I said to her, “Well, you wanted me to wait to find out the sex…what if I don’t tell you?” and of course she was like “OH that’s not fair!”  When I told her, she was so excited.  I’m sure she will be searching and searching for baby clothes for my little man in no time.  :)

Movement:  I’m still waiting on Mr. Peanut to tell me he’s around.  I keep feeling little (I’m talking tiny) twinges of things I think might be kicks, but I really don’t know and until they basically bang me on the side of the head (err…stomach) I won’t really realize they are truly kicks.  I’m OK with waiting until he’s ready though.  *Side note: as I was typing this I felt something on my right side.  Could be a gas bubble, could be movement.  Who knows?

(That blue material is my tank top, not my bra…in case anyone thought that!  lol)

Food Cravings:  Artichokes!  I can’t seem to get enough of them lately.  In fact, just today for lunch I tried a recipe from Giada and absolutely loved it!  I can’t wait to share it with you guys.  I am also loving the steak lately, but really trying to eat it sparingly.

What I Miss:  Margaritas.  It’s hot outside and I still am having a taste for them.  It’s funny, before I was pregnant, I didn’t really like margaritas all that much.  Now, that’s all I want!  I’m lucky in that no foods make me sick, I can still sleep relatively easily, I don’t have to pee every five minutes, and I just feel good all around!  I don’t miss much because I’m too busy appreciating still feeling normal!

Sleep:  Sleep is still great!  Every so often I have a bad night where I wake up and my back hurts, but this is typically after I’ve had a somewhat hard day at work.  I am getting better and better at asking people to lift things for me, which helps alleviate the back pain.  I am only going to the bathroom 1 time a night, which is how often I used to go to the bathroom pre-pregnancy.  No complaints in this department!

Symptoms:  Mood swings!  My poor, but fantastic husband is a trooper and puts up with all my irrational outburst and hysterical crying.  The other day I broke down and had a 15 minute sob about…nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  I think he told me I was wrong about something insignificant and I took it the wrong way.  Then I couldn’t stop crying.  I told him to leave me alone because, of course, it was all his fault I couldn’t stop crying, so he did.  I ended up taking a bath and quietly calming myself down in the tub.  I went and apologized to him later and he said not to worry about it, that I was pregnant and these things were bound to happen.  What a great guy!  I really, truly hate the hormone imbalance your mind and body go through with pregnancy, but it will all be worth it in the end.

(Kind of a creepy picture…this is his face from the font.  His “skull” picture. That black orb towards the top of the picture is one of his eye sockets.  As you may have guessed, we opted to forego the 3D pictures.  I kind of like the idea of being surprised by his features!)

Best Moment This Week:  Finding out the sex!  We have been looking forward to this day for 3 weeks and I am so excited that day finally arrived and brought us good news!  As I said before, I just wanted a healthy baby, but to know we are having a little man just makes my heart sing.  One of the moms in a Facebook group I’m a part of said once she found out the sex of her baby, she felt instantly more bonded to him.  I know exactly what she means.  My little guy is safe and sound in my belly and I could not be more thrilled!

What I Am Looking Forward To:  Feeling those first real, unmistakeable kicks!  I know Mr. Peanut will make his presence known when he’s good and ready and until then I’ll wait.  Jeff and I do have a little moment each day where we sit quietly and see if I can feel the baby.  I can’t wait to feel those kicks and share them with Jeff.  Just thinking about it makes me get all teary eyed.

Any Fun Gifts/Purchases Received/Made:  Two!  One, I received a few weeks ago and forgot to share (because I decided to skip Week 19 apparently) and one I bought just today!

I received this from my mom.  She found it at Hallmark!  They are little individual, magnetized letters you can string together to form words.  Of course, she spelled out Peanut!  She said she wanted to find something with a peanut on it and then saw these letters in the back of the store.  I thought this little gesture of love was wonderful and as soon as I opened the box I started crying.  (Raging hormones?  Nah…)  It is the first decoration for Peanut’s room and I can already see exactly where I want to put it once we get the furniture and everything picked out and assembled.

These two articles of clothing I bought today right after the ultrasound!  I went to Babies R Us to look at a few of the cribs I had put on my wish list to check out and walked right past the clearance rack.  The little swim trunks caught my eye first.  I mean, come on.  How can you not love little Hawaiian print swim trunks?  They are so small!  I love them!

Then I saw the Hawaiian print onesie and, since I’m a Hawaiian girl at heart, I had to get it.  At first, I thought it was just a shirt but no!  It’s a onesie!  Hopefully they will fit Peanut next year.  I took a gamble.  Hopefully it pays off!  These are the first two pieces of clothing I bought for the little guy (obviously since I didn’t know the sex until today).  They look so cute hanging in his closet.  :)

Thank you, everyone, for the well wishes.  Jeff and I appreciate them greatly and we know you all are just as excited as we are to meet this little guy!

Until next week…

Pan Seared Porterhouse

It’s summer.  I don’t know about you, but when I think of summer, I think of grilling (though to be honest I haven’t been doing much of that yet).  BUT, my friends, when I think of steaks, I think FRYING PAN!

I know most of you associate steaks and the grill, but hear me out.  I promise you won’t regret it.  Would I ever steer you wrong?  Heck no!

The first thing you need for a great steak is just that…a great steak!  I personally have certain “feelings” about big box store steaks.  I just don’t think they are as good as my local grocery store’s variety.  Now, it could all be in my head, but I really don’t think so.  However, you decide what steaks are best for you, and go with it.  Jeff and I happen to love porterhouse steaks (especially since I stretch mine out to two meals), so that’s typically what I pick up.  Well, that or a filet.  What can I say?  We have expensive tastes…

OK.  So you have your steak.  Now what you have to decide is rub or don’t rub.  I absolutely love Dorothy Lane‘s steak rub, so I use it every time we have steak.  Yum!  Some people prefer salt and pepper only, some people like a little more flavor.  I’m a flavorful gal, so I lay on the seasonings!

Step 1:  The Prep
Thirty (yes at least 30) minutes before you cook your steak, you want to remove it from the fridge, unwrap it from any packaging, and let it stand at room temperature.  You want to get some of the fridge chill off the steak so it cooks more evenly.  This is a great time to sprinkle on your rub.  Really rub it into the meat too!  You want every little nook and cranny to be all yummy with goodness.

Step 2:  The Pan (& Oven)
Preheat a large skillet to medium high and set your oven to 450º.  Melt a couple tablespoons each of butter and oil in your pan and let it get all nice and hot.  I use both kinds of fat for two reasons:  one-butter has a higher smoking point than oil so you can get it hotter and two-I like the flavor of the two combined.

Step 3:  The Caramelization
When your pan is nice and hot, place your steaks in the fat.  You want to hear a nice sizzle.  You are creating the gorgeous golden caramel color on the meat that brings out all the flavors.  This, my friends, is the most important step in the cooking process.  A great caramelization can really, really make a steak go from “this is pretty good” to “oh my God, will you cook for me every night?”  A warning:  only make this steak for people you don’t mind cooking for because they WILL show up with those puppy dog eyes begging for food.  Trust me on this.

Step 4:  The Bake
Cook your steak over medium high heat for a couple minutes or until you achieve the caramel color we talked about above.  Once this occurs, you will want to flip your steaks.  As soon as you flip the steak, stick the whole thing, pan and all (IF YOUR PAN IS OVEN SAFE*), in the oven.  Cook at 450º until your desired temperature is 5-10º within reach.  This takes into account the resting time.

Step 5:  The Rest
Resting your meat is the most important step in the cooking process.  I know what you’re thinking…”But, Bethany, you said caramelization was the most important step.”  Well, kids, it was a trick statement.  There are two most important steps because, in my opinion, without both…well, just don’t skip either step.

Resting gives the meat time to redistribute all the juices.  Otherwise, you’ll cut into the steak and all the juices you worked so hard to enclose trickle on out, leaving your meat dry.  Who likes dry meat?  *crickets chirping*  That’s what I thought.  So, do everyone a favor, remove your meat from the pan and let it sit, covered loosely with foil (this is called “tenting”), for 5-10 minutes.

You may be thinking that the meat will get cold, but it won’t.  Your meat actually continues to cook while it’s resting, which is why you want to pull it 5-10º prior to the desired doneness.  This chart will help you figure out at what temperature you should pull your meat:

(source)

Remember, pull your meat out 5-10º before the internal temperature reaches the temperature listed above.  For example, Jeff likes his steaks medium rare.  Taking into account the temperature for medium rare meat is between 130-140º, I usually pull his steak around 125º.  Since I have to have mine well done right now, I leave my steak in until it reaches about 150º.

Yes, I use a meat thermometer (like the one below) to ensure the doneness of my meat.  I’m just not good at touching the steak and telling the internal temperature.  I’ve overcooked many a steak by thinking I can just tell.  Lesson learned:  use a thermometer.

If you are still concerned about cold meat, you can put your tented meat in the microwave.  WARNING:  DO NOT TURN ON THE MICROWAVE!  THIS IS JUST A HOLDING AREA TO CONTAIN ANY HEAT THAT ESCAPES.  YOU WILL BLOW UP YOUR MICROWAVE IF YOU TURN IT ON WITH FOIL INSIDE.  I KNOW FROM VERY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE!  But that’s another story…

OK, so let’s recap.  You bought your steak, took it out of the fridge 30 minutes before cooking to take the chill off, caramelized it in a hot, buttered (and oiled) pan, flipped it, stuck it in the oven until it was a little undercooked, removed it from the pan, tented it with some foil, and served it up to a very hungry, drooling spouse, right?  Sounds like you completed all the steps.

Except prepping your side dishes.  You did prep side dishes, right?  You’re not gonna go all caveman on me and gnaw on steak bones until you can’t see straight, are you?  Wait, you don’t have any good side dish recipes?  Well, I guess you’ll just have to stay tuned to see my quick and painless way to make artichokes.  You don’t like artichokes?  My friend, wait.  Just wait.  In time…

*You should be able to find information about your pan on the internet, but if you can’t I would play it safe and not use it in the oven.  I don’t want you to ruin a perfectly good cooking device.  Instead, while your oven is heating up, stick a baking sheet in it so it gets nice and warm.  Then, when you flip your steaks, cook them in the pan for a few minutes to caramelize them, and then place them on the baking sheet to finish cooking internally.

Pistachio Chicken

So there I was, watching an episode of Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes when she mentioned having her chef prepare his famous Pistachio Chicken for a guest she was having for lunch.  Pistachios?  With Chicken?  The more I thought about it, the more yummy it sounded.

I googled “oprah pistachio chicken” and found this recipe.  Now, I’m all about cooking with lots of ingredients and using anything necessary to achieve the perfect dish, but that day I didn’t feel like it.  Instead, I went to the source and found a different recipe for Pistachio Chicken.  This one was much easier with far fewer ingredients.

The first time I made it, it turned out a bit soggy, but it was still delicious!  For one thing, I didn’t measure the ingredients for the honey mustard coating and secondly, I followed the directions for cooking against my better judgement.  The recipe tells you to preheat the oven to 500º and then turn it down to 375º as soon as you put the chicken in the oven.  This time I made a few tweaks and it turned out fabulously!  If you like pistachios, you should definitely make this!

Pistachio Crusted Chicken
(adapted from allrecipes.com)

1 pound chicken breast, butterflied
1 cup pistachios, chopped
1/2 cup bread crumbs
3* tbsp olive oil
3* tbsp honey
3* tbsp dijon mustard
salt & pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 500º.  Place a cooling rack over a sheet pan and spray with cooking spray.

In a shallow dish, combine the pistachios and breadcrumbs.

Side note: if you are thinking, “Who wants to shell all those pistachios?” I gotcha covered.  Head to Trader Joes and pick up a bag of their Pistachio Nutmeats.  What a time saver!  Also, use your blender or Magic Bullet to make short work of smashing all those nuts.  :)

In a separate dish, combine the olive oil, honey, dijon mustard, salt, & pepper.  (BTW, this makes an extremely yummy honey mustard.  You may want to make extras in a separate bowl for dipping!)

Coat each piece of chicken first in the honey mustard mixture and then in the pistachio mixture.  Place chicken on the cooling rack and place in the oven.

Unlike the original recipe I suggest you bake at 500º for 5 minutes, then drop the temperature down to 375º for 15 minutes or until cooked through.

The resulting dish is slightly sweet yet savory and I think it’s perfect!  Jeff, not really caring for nuts, wasn’t a huge fan of it, but as I said before if you like pistachios, you must try this!  It’s good the next day even if it’s not crispy!

*I followed the recipe and used 2 tbsp of these ingredients, but next time I will probably bump it up to 3 tbsp each to ensure even coating of the chicken.

Week 20

OK, so you may notice I skipped a week.  Whoops!  I totally meant to take pictures and blog about week 19, but with Carolyn visiting and a few other things going on, I kept putting it off and putting it off until it was really ridiculous to write one.  I figured I’d just write a stellar week 20 post!

I’ve decided to start using a form of sorts to keep track of different things instead of just writing what I feel like writing.  This way I’ll be able to look back on various posts and relive the experience!  (Thanks, Abby, for giving me the idea.  I was rereading your 21 week post and thought you had a great idea!)

How Far Along:  I am officially halfway at 20 weeks!

Size of Baby:  According the the source (babycenter.com), Peanut is 10.5 ounces now and is about the size of a banana.  Oddly enough, I just made banana bread without even realizing!  I’m connecting with my baby in ways I don’t even know already!

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  When I weighed myself this morning, I was exactly (to the tenth of a pound) 10 pounds heavier than preconception.  Once again, according to the source this is exactly right!  I love being an overachiever…well, I guess in this case it’s just an adequate achiever.  :P

Maternity Clothes:  My favorite thing in the world to wear right now, aside from jammies, is a pair of maternity shorts I got from Old Navy.  They have an elastic waistband that hits just below my little belly, as many maternity pants do.  I do not feel comfortable almost at all in pre-pregnancy pants.  I originally bought a few pair of pants that were one size bigger than my normal size, but even those just aren’t feeling right anymore.

I am still using the ponytail holder loop trick to stretch out the life of my pants a little more and have contemplated going to get a belly band or two from Target, but sooner or later I will make the full transition to maternity pants.  I have decided, however, that I’m not a huge fan of the full panel pants.  I don’t think my belly is so big I need that extra support right now and it really just feels like a lot of extra, unnecessary fabric.  I’m sure as Peanut grows I will appreciate it more, but for now I’m kind of “eh” about it.

Maternity tops, however, are few and far between.  I am still pretty comfy in flowy, non-maternity tops, so for now I’m sticking with them.  I do have a few maternity tops in my closet for when I decide to make the switch though.  You know, just in case!

Gender:  Right now Peanut is still just a peanut.  Non-gendered.  Well, to me and Jeff anyhow.  We are impatiently waiting until next Friday for our gender revealing ultrasound.  Every day we get closer and closer, but it still feels like so far away!  As soon as I know, parents, friends, family, and Facebook will know!  It’s kind of like finding out you’re pregnant…you would love to keep the secret, but it’s so juicy you just can’t!  We will, however, be keeping the name of the baby a secret until he/she is here with us.

Movement:  Movement is a funny, fickle topic.  Everyone says it feels like something different.  I have heard it feels like gas bubbles, going over a hill in your car, food pangs, waves, butterflies, etc.  I honestly do not know if I’ve felt anything yet or not.  The other night, I was sitting on the couch and I felt a small sensation of bubbles popping.  Then, on the way home from work a few nights ago, I felt strange hunger pang sensations.  This could have been movement or it could have been hunger!  I did eat as soon as I got home, but I kept feeling…something.  It’s such a hard thing to describe and, I think until you feel it yourself, you really just can’t explain the feeling.  I will tell you, however, I am so freaking excited to feel that first real kick or punch and to share those moments with Jeff I am practically beside myself!

Food Cravings:  Sushi.  Wait, wait, wait!  Until you guys get all “you can’t eat sushi!” on me, let me reassure you I only eat 100% cooked sushi…i.e. Tempura Shrimp rolls.  YUM!  I am still loving the fruit.  In fact, as soon as Jeff gets home from work we are going to Sears to look at an upright freezer (to stock all those packages of breast milk, casseroles, and soups I plan to have on hand) and to Dorothy Lane to pick up a bunch of produce!  I am back to liking red meat, which, again according to the source is an excellent source of protein.  I really don’t eat it that often, maybe 1-2 times a week, but the fact that I have more options in my diet is exciting.  I don’t really even mind well done steak!  I obviously prefer a little moo to my meat, but for now, I’ll make the sacrifice.

What I Miss:  Hmm…I really don’t miss much of anything!  Wine, every so often, but honestly I have had a bottle of non-alcoholic wine (yes, they make that!) on my counter for about 2 months now and haven’t thought twice about opening it.

Sleep:  I was going to talk about sleep in the “What I Miss” category, but then realized there was an entire category focused on this topic.  I was going to say I don’t even miss sleep because I still sleep pretty much exactly how I did before pregnancy.  Pre-pregnancy I would sleep half on my side, half on my stomach with one leg thrown over one of my king sized pillows.  Now, I do the exact same thing, but with my Leachco Back ‘N Belly Contoured body pillow.

It’s a pretty comfy pillow, with two exceptions.  One, in the curve where your neck goes, the material is stretch pretty taut and sometimes it feels kind of sharp against my neck.  This can usually be manipulated a little bit so it doesn’t feel quite as hard, but it is a little uncomfortable at times.  The other thing is the feel of the material.  It is kind of a stiff fabric and not as soft as the Egyptian cotton pillowcases I am used to.  I plan to solve this problem at some point by buying a couple pillowcases on clearance, cutting the ends off, and slipping them over the pillow.  I have had this idea for a few weeks now and haven’t done it, so that tells you the original material isn’t that irritating.  :)

Symptoms:  One huge, huge symptom I’m experiencing is back pain!  It is fine some days and HORRIBLE others!  As a retail manager, I am on my feet constantly, as well as lifting boxes and reaching above my head for items.  This results in pain in my upper back. I am getting better and better at asking for help at work with lifting.  I am such an independent person I hate asking for help, but each day I am a little more dependent on the other people I work with.  They are all very willing to move things for me.  I also am really focusing on lifting with my legs when I do have to lift anything from the floor.  By focusing on good form, I know I have alleviated some of the stress put on my back.  I am also taking a lot of breaks to sit and elevate my feet.  That’s one great thing about my furniture at home…about 95% of the time, when I’m sitting I am sitting on a reclining sofa with my feet up.  This, I have heard, helps with back pain as well.

I don’t get as much lower back pain yet, but I assume with time, and my expanding belly, I will feel it much more.  Thankfully, I have a wonderful sister-in-law who is a physical therapist and can give me tips and pointers for alleviating pain!

Best Moment This Week:  Reaching 20 weeks!  It is such a milestone!  We are halfway to meeting our little one!  Jeff and I are so excited to meet him/her we can’t really stand it!

What I Am Looking Forward To:  Absolutely 100% the biggest thing we are looking forward to is finding out the sex of our baby.  We are beside ourselves with anticipation.

Any Fun Gifts/Purchases Received/Made: The biggest thing I bought lately was the Leachco pillow, but I’m sure as soon as we find out the sex, I will be buying lots and lots of little baby things.

Hopefully this post makes up for the post I missed!  Now, I’m gonna go flop into bed with Jeff.  Husbands love pregnancy pillows too!

Week 18

Hello, again.  I know I’m several days late in posting this, but I have had a very busy, somewhat stressful weekend.  Better late than never, right?

How Big is the Baby
The baby is about 5.5 inches long (about the size of a bell pepper) and about 7 ounces.  Lots of changes are occurring as they do every week, but as of yet, I haven’t felt anything.

How I’m Changing
I still feel like I’m getting bigger, but when you compare this week’s pictures to last week’s, I feel like I actually look a little smaller!  It may be because I’m wearing a navy blue t-shirt instead of a pink one.  Or I may have had a big lunch last week.  Who knows.  :)  As I said above, I’m not feeling any other changes, but according to the doctor, I should start feeling things in another couple weeks!

How I’m Feeling
I am still feeling great (imagine that!).  I nearly feel like these posts are pointless because I don’t feel like I’m saying anything new ever!

Other News
I guess that last statement isn’t really true because I have two new pieces of news to share.  First of all, I have been posting my Weekly posts on Thursdays, because I have been thinking for the entire pregnancy that my weeks changed on Thursdays.  After a trip to the doctor last Thursday, I found out that my weeks change on Fridays actually!  So from now on (as long as I stick to the schedule) you should see the blog posts on Fridays.

My other piece of news is the most exciting!  I found out the date of my gender ultrasound!  Mark your calendars for Friday, July 29th.  We shall know if Peanut is nutty or not that day!  Jeff and I are really excited to find out and I am having a very hard time being patient but, like I told him, we will have to be patient every day for the rest of our lives after December 9th, so we may as well start now!

That’s it for this post, but in a few more days I should have a Week 19 post!  Stay tuned! And, yes, those are preggo shorts in my pictures.  :)
